OEM Parts versus Aircraft Used Parts

Aircrafts need regular maintenance and the replacement of parts if they are to remain airworthy. If you are looking for aircraft parts, you could go for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts or aircraft used parts. Each option has pros and cons that you should consider before making a purchase. The greatest advantage of OEM parts is that you will be sure they are quality parts while it will be much difficult to prove the authenticity of used parts. The fact that OEM parts are new means they will not have suffered from tear and wear, meaning they will give you better service.
The greatest advantage of aircraft used parts over OEM parts is the fact that you get to save money. Just like a new car, OEM parts lose a big fraction of their value the moment they are bought. Aircraft repairs cost aircraft owners tens of thousands of pounds each year and finding a way of saving money is therefore important. You need not worry about the quality of used parts. You will be assured of the highest quality if you buy them from suppliers or other industry players who are recognized by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and its equivalent in other countries. Also, who have JAR 145 approval (given through Joint Aviation Authority annual audits), who subscribe to the ATA World Airline Suppliers guide, and who have the relevant BSI/ISO approvals.
Aircraft used parts are advantageous over OEM parts in that you will be sure that they are reliable since they will have been used in another aircraft. Note that used parts that are approved by the relevant bodies are not defective. You should however take the initiative to find out if the part you are buying is from a reputable aircraft salvage yard. The fact that these parts are cheaper than OEM parts means you can buy parts from some of the best manufacturers whose OEM parts tend to be expensive, a good example being Rolls-Royce. Buying used parts is the only option if you have older model aircrafts since OEM parts will not be in production.
